North Park Coming Spring 2022

North Park Phase 1 has a new completion date.  Construction slowed over the last year as the contractor worked to find sources of fill material that meet the stringent standards established for the new park by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation. The project needs about 100,000 cu yards of soil and a little over half of that has been delivered.  Much of the soil has or is planned for import from development sites in Queens: on Queens Blvd, South Conduit Avenue and Vernon Boulevard.  Additional fill material has been supplied by North American Aggregate, a company that mines clean sand from the Ambrose Navigation Channel.

Since we last North Park update, the path to Schmul Playground has been filled and graded and the gravel base is in place awaiting the final asphalt cover. Hopefully you have been able to get a peak of the arc path that climbs the hill from Schmul Playground to the crest of the new park.  Work also continues on the foundations and gabion walls for the wetland overlook  and the bird tower.  The wetland overlook offers an expansive view of Main Creek and the wetlands to the south and the north.

Lomma Construction completed installation of a water line from Schmul Park to North Park Phase 1 that will provide water for a ground hydrant and a drinking fountain.  Lomma is now installing a system of underground pipes and concrete manholes to ensure there is adequate stormwater control in the new park.  Lomma is also bringing in thousands of truckloads of topsoil to lay the planting beds for the picnic area and the seed farm. NYC’s nearby Greenbelt Native Plant Center  will operate seven acres of native seed plots, providing flowering meadows that include a wide variety of native grasses and flowering plants such as Purple Coneflowers and Black-Eyed Susans.

Construction will pick up as the weather gets warmer and we are looking forward to the fabrication and installation of the bird tower and the construction of a composting comfort station. We are also beginning to plan for the park ribbon cutting and opening events.  Stay tuned for more. #NorthPark
