Volunteer Landscaping @ Schmul Park 9/25/21
Join the Freshkills Park Alliance and NYC Parks Department for a volunteer day at Schmul Park on September 25th. Summer is officially over and we have to ready our pollinator garden for Fall.
We will lay mulch around our native plants, which helps to insulate the soil, conserve water, and prevent invasive weeds from returning.

Join NYC Parks Department and Freshkills Park Alliance staff with United Activities Unlimited (UAU) in honoring the 20th annual observance of the attacks on 9/11 through a day of service. As part of NY4Parks Daffodil Project, the largest volunteer effort in NYC history, we will plant Daffodil bulbs and contribute to a living memorial in remembrance of the victims of 9/11.

Kayak along Freshkills Park’s waterways! This two mile round-trip paddle is a chance to explore the creeks and shorelines of Freshkills Park and experience the wildlife while the site is closed to the public. We know this program fills quickly and wish we could offer it more frequently.

As a part of the High Line’s Insectageddon, join artist Ash Ferlito for an all-ages evening of mothing and cyanotypes, a time-based photography, at the Freshkills Park Studio + Gallery. Through a process of attracting, studying, and capturing the image of insects to create a visual record, participants will learn about the many moths that call Staten Island home as well as how to explore and capture the likeness of moths on their own!

As a part of the High Line’s Insectageddon, all-ages are invited to walk and explore the insects that live at Freshkills Park with the Staten Island Museum’s Director of Natural Sciences Colleen Evans and a Freshkills Park biologist. Pariticpants will use nets to catch and learn about insects up close and see what makes Freshkills an ideal habitat!

Join Assemblymember Cusick and the Parks Department for a bike ride along Freshkills Park’s New Springville Greenway, and participate in the Total Fitness Challenge. The Total Fitness challenge was created by Assemblymember Cusick, to encourage students K through 8th grade to stay mentally and physically active throughout the summer.
