“Mulch ado about Parks” Volunteer Landscaping @ Schmul Park 7/31/21 @ 9:00 AM

Jul 31, 2021 9:00am

Join the Freshkills Park Alliance and NYC Parks Department for a volunteer day at Schmul Park on July 31st. July is National Parks and Recreation month, so let’s help out at Schmul Park and discover ways to get creative in our green spaces!

Learn how to support neighborhood public spaces through a paper upcycling project and community service.

To start, we’ll create upcycled handmade paper that incorporates phrases written by poets from Shakespeare to Lorde to you, as well as bits from nature like seeds and wildflowers! Compared to plastic, organic materials like cotton, hemp, or wood are some of the easiest materials to upcycle in the form of paper. We’ll transform paper fit for the recycling bin into unique works of word art.

We’ll end by spreading mulch in our pollinator garden, learning where mulch comes from, and all the ways mulch supports our parks!
