Ballfield at Schmul Park Reopens after $750K Renovation

On Thursday September 14, NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver, FAICP, joined representatives from Deputy Borough President Ed Burke’s Office and Council Member Steven Matteo’s Office to cut the ribbon on a completely reconstructed baseball field at Schmul Park. Funding for the reconstruction was provided in the amount of $750,000 from Council Member Matteo.

On Saturday April 16, 2016, twenty-five energetic New York Cares Volunteers arose early and took the bus from Manhattan to Staten Island to help the Freshkills Park Team get ready for spring.

One group removed the disheveled piles of dead grasses from Schmul Park and left behind a carpet of mulch through which peeked  small clumps of new green growth.  


From Behind the Mounds: Schmul Park Weed Warriors!

One bright and sunny Saturday last month, volunteers from various parts of Staten Island, Brooklyn, and Manhattan came together to weed, rake, and restore plantings around Freshkills Park’s own Schmul Park in the Travis neighborhood.

Schmul Park was once an unimproved cement lot and scuffy playground on Freshkills Park’s northwest side.
