Student-Led Ecological Research
“I personally loved my time at the park and it very much sparked my interest, a lot more than I thought it would, in the STEM world of environmental science.” – Luis from Curtis High School
“This hands-on project in this environment was a personal experience to each of us, and allowed us to take part in bettering our environment.” – Arijeta from Curtis High School
Habitat Assessment:
Between 2024 and 2025, students from various K-12 schools were invited to Freshkills Park to gain hands-on experience in scientific research as part of the Youth Learning as Environmental Citizen Scientists (YLACES) initiative. The park’s unique mix of woodland, wetland, and grassland is home to various fascinating species of birds, mammals, and arthropods, making it an ideal learning resource and research site.
Upon arrival at Freshkills Park, students were informed of its history, from its inception as the world’s biggest landfill to its ongoing transformation into the largest public park built in New York City in over a century. After gaining a deeper understanding of environmental reclamation, students were ready to immerse themselves in their research.
Students engaged in educational activities, including water monitoring and arthropod surveys, familiarizing themselves with native and invasive species. Water monitoring and species surveys introduced students to concepts such as metrics of waterfront health, keystone species, and the importance of native habitat restoration. Students engaged with practical field tools, such as transects, pH and salinity tests, and sampling– empowering them to use these skillsets in other research areas. Reflecting on their experience at the park, students reported feeling a stronger connection to nature and inspiration to get further involved in community science initiatives.
Participants:
During the 2024-2025 cycle, participating K-12 schools ranged from almost every borough in New York City. Highlighted below are a few of the projects carried out by the students from Curtis High School, St. Clare’s School, New Dorp High School, The Packer Collegiate Institute and the Bronx Leadership Academy, available for viewing:
