Arthropod Surveys with the Bronx Leadership Academy

Bronx Leadership Academy Students at Freshkills Park

In March 2025, 30 students from the Bronx Leadership Academy visited Freshkills Park to conduct arthropod surveys. The students used nets to capture insects and bug boxes and plastic bags for identification. Students utilized their data collection sheets to record weather conditions, habitat features, and insect physical characteristics. Students familiarized themselves with concepts like habitat health, native and invasive species, and the importance of pollinators.

Here are some of the species discovered by students:

  • Green-sided Grasshopper
  • Micro-fly
  • Ladybug
  • Leafhopper
  • Black Beetle
  • Jumping Spider
  • Gnat
  • Caterpillar
  • Roly-Poly (Pill Bug)
  • Spider
