Photos from Discovery Day at Freshkills Park

It’s so inspiring to see how people are photographing Freshkills Park. That’s why there’s the new Fresh Look: Freshkills Park Photo Contest, inviting people to share their images of the unique landscape.

Between now and July 5th, photographers can submit their images to photo@freshkillspark.org for consideration. Winning photographs will be published in the Staten Island Advance and displayed for the public at the Staten Island Arts Culture Lounge at the St. George Ferry Terminal. See the Freshkills Photo Contest Rules for more details.

The weather at Discovery Day on May 15th made for some dramatic images. Photograph the park at the next Discovery Day on June 26th and tag your photos #freshkillspark #discoveryday for a chance to be included on the website.

 

Natural contrasts are the best and I was blessed to capture this this afternoon. It was taken at FreshKills Park in Staten Island. As much as I think my hometown is boring, it’s still a beautiful place and I shouldn’t be so mean to it. ??☁️??- “At 2,200 acres, Freshkills Park will be almost three times the size of Central Park and the largest park developed in New York City in over 100 years. Formerly the world’s largest landfill, this enormous park will one day hold a variety of public spaces and facilities, including playgrounds, athletic fields, kayak launches, horseback riding trails, large-scale art installations, and much more.
