Reclaimed lands have experienced large ecological changes as a result of their varied uses. These changes can have profound effects for both the sites themselves as well as the region as a whole. This panel will review some of the ecological shifts we have seen over time and discuss how we can effectively encourage beneficial changes. Issues covered will include how to manage and study the shifting network of ecological services, defining “appropriate” versus native ecosystems in a changing habitat, and emphasizing different scales that range from microscopic to regional.
