Land Acknowledgement

We would like to acknowledge that Freshkills Park is located on Lenapehoking, the traditional and ancestral territory of the Lenape people, now known today as the territories of New York, New Jersey, Delaware, and Pennsylvania. We thank the Lenape tribes who called Staten Island their home– the Hackensack, Raritans, and Tappan for their hospitality and stewardship of this land before their unjust removal and relocation to Oklahoma. As Freshkills acknowledges our roles as beneficiaries to this violence, we are committed to preserving and upkeeping these natural, irreplaceable resources the Lenape found themselves in harmony with. We hope to honor the Lenape as we live, work, and study at The Freshkills Alliance by not only preserving our relationship with the land, but supporting and advocating for contemporary native sovereignty in this territory and beyond.
