Join our green roof field trip next Friday, July 17!
Next Friday, we’ll be taking a field trip to visit the green roof at the Parks Department’s Five Borough Technical Services Complex on Randall’s Island. This is no ordinary green roof–it’s the fourth largest in New York City (at over 15,000 sq ft) and uses 13 different green roof systems. The systems serve to absorb rainwater, keep the building cool and reduce its carbon footprint, of course, but they also provide a working laboratory for green roof design and construction where the performance of various different systems can be monitored and compared. The lessons learned from these comparisons can be applied to future installations around the city.
Five Borough’s roof is not open for general public tours, but you’re welcome to join our tour. We’ll be meeting in Harlem Friday afternoon around 3:30 pm to catch the bus to Randall’s Island for a 4-5pm tour of the facilities. If you’d like to attend, please RSVP to Martha at martha.powers@parks.nyc.gov. We’ll get back to you with more details.
