Gaia Institute manages stormwater in Hunt’s Point
The Hugo Neu Metals Recycling Facility, in the Hunt’s Point area of the Bronx, is getting a stormwater management makeover. The Gaia Institute’s new system for the 6.5-acre facility recycles stormwater that would otherwise run off into the Bronx River Estuary. Stormwater is caught in basins and then pumped, using solar power, through two planted installations: a green wall of ferns and mosses which filter the water by absorbing nutrients and a constructed wetland area in which plants, sediment and soil filter out pollutants. The new system will help the facility, which processes thousands of tons of metal waste every week, to reduce the outflow of pollutants into the estuary.
